Although our modern Santa Claus has a long history from the 3rd century bishop, Saint Nicolas, into the secular, jolly old elf of this century, Mrs. Santa Claus appears to have sprung to life all of a sudden. Not based on myth or tradition, she simply appears at Santa’s side in popular writings by American authors in the mid-1800s.
The first reference of a Mrs. Claus takes place in the work of James Rees in the year 1849. Though his story features a pair dressed as an old man and his wife delivering splendid gifts on Christmas Eve, the story ends with the do-gooders not being Mr. and Mrs. Claus though. But the concept is planted and soon starts to expand.
Within the next few decades Mrs. Claus is introduced in stories as the supportive spouse, handling the naughty or nice list, or keeping Santa and his elves fed. It wasn’t until 1889 that Mrs. Santa Claus has a bit of identity of her own in the poem “Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride.” The charming Mrs. Claus persuades her husband to take her with him on Christmas Eve. She takes care of the reindeer, but sadly, doesn’t get to deliver any gifts! Always the helper, she mends a stocking for a poor little boy so Santa can fill it with toys.
For years, she continued to be represented as merely an inconspicuous character, there to assist Santa in his exhaustive work. Mrs. Claus is often exposed as a tubby, silver haired, kindly woman, happy to selflessly aid Santa and his elves in their workshop at the North Pole, supplying them her yummy meals, and ensuring they are safely prepared for their long journey. Although this is the most typical portrayal of Mrs. Claus, more modern stories and films have placed Mrs. Claus in a range of roles, showing her to be an inventive and powerful lady who could very well handle Christmas Eve on her own!
Children’s books and TV shows daringly featured Mrs. Santa as the primary character. Books devoted to Mrs. Santa have been written since 1914, and TV has had a great time with Mrs. Santa. She’s been everything from a vampire to the fiery protagonist of the 1996 Hallmark special, Mrs. Santa Claus.
