The city of Bath, in Somerset, is situated no more than 12 or 13 miles away from the city of Bristol but it is radically different in many ways. You will find that Bath is much more leisurely than its neighbour. With its many open spaces, Georgian buildings and elegant crescents it is a highly popular place in which to take a vacation.
The city of Bath has been important for an incredibly long, long time. Because of the hot springs, unique in Britain, it was a place of reverence for the Celts. Until the sixteenth century Bath was just a town, Queen Elizabeth I granted the town a Royal Charter in fifteen ninety, having spent some time there in fifteen seventy four. In the eighteenth century Bath became an extremely popular spa resort where Beau Nash ruled the social scene and good etiquette was essential.
It was during this time that Jane Austen, who lived there for some time, wrote Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, and where Gainsborough became well known as a landscape artist and portraitist. Bath has a multitude of tourist attractions including, the already mentioned Roman Baths, The Royal Crescent (especially No.1), The Holburne Museum of Arts and Bath Abbey. The Assembly Rooms is a must see visitor attraction and this is where you will see the fascinating Museum of Costume which exhibits a range of historical and modern dress.
Many folk choose to stay for only a day in the city of Bath however if you want to see everything it is far better to take a short break here and walk around relaxed exploring all the city has to offer.
