The History of National Doughnut Day
- The Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in 1938. The day pays tribute to the “doughnut lassies,” which were female Salvation Army volunteers who provided the treats to soldiers on the front lines during World War I as a morale booster.
- With restricted resources, these treats were fried—seven at a time. The lassies fried the doughnuts in soldiers’ helmets.
- Today, The Salvation Army still plays an active role in supporting Doughnut Day. Salvation Army staff and volunteers celebrate the holiday, often by delivering doughnuts and hosting events across the country.
DIY Doughnut Recipes
If your craving for doughnuts has reached Homer Simpson levels, throw your willpower out the window with one of these DIY doughnut recipes:
Glazed Yeast Doughnuts from Baker Bettie
Fry these in the Breville Smart Fryer ($149.95 at Williams-Sonoma), which has a convenient “doughnut” setting, to create a dozen doughy pillows that you can top with anything your rapidly beating heart desires.
Maple Bacon Doughnuts from Oven Love
Bacon makes everything better. (Sorry, vegetarians, but you can’t argue with science.) These sweet, salty rings of perfection are made with coconut flour ($3.81 at Vitacost) and are free of gluten, grains and refined sugar.
Cake Mix Doughnuts from It’s Always Autumn
Start with your favorite boxed cake mix (Funfetti, obviously) and this Babycakes Mini Doughnut Maker ($25.21 at Walmart), and you can make four wee treats in just minutes.
Sugared Doughnut from Table for Two
For the culinary challenged or those of us who ain’t got time for that, here’s a dangerously easy way to make doughnuts at home. You’ll just need a Doughnut Cutter ($9.95 at Willliams-Sonoma) and a tube of Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits—yes, really.
DIY Doughnut Crafts
A doughnut-themed bath bomb? These are so pretty that we would be hesitant to use them.
Amazing concept. This would be a seriously cool gift to give to any doughnut-loving friend.
All this craft requires are nail polish, toothpicks and some round sunglasses. Sweet!
